Wetland systems applied to wine effluents: a prospective scientific study

Abstract

The wine sector generates large volumes of effluent, the inadequate treatment of which can have a serious impact on the soil and water resources. In this scenario, wetland systems have emerged as a promising alternative for treating these effluents. The aim of this study was to carry out a survey of studies related to the application of wetland systems in the treatment of effluents from the wine industry, investigating their main characteristics and trends. To achieve this goal, searches were conducted in the Web Of Science and Scopus databases. The results obtained indicate that there is a limited amount of research involving the use of these systems to treat wine industry effluents, however, the data shows a growth in interest in this topic over time, with publications dating back to 1997. The predominant areas of publication are Environmental Sciences and Engineering, with South Africa and Spain leading the way. In addition, this study revealed a predominance of wetland systems with subsurface flow, the use of emerging macrophytes, hybrid systems and gravel as a support medium to treat this type of effluent, providing a comprehensive overview of the development of research into wetland systems for the treatment of wine-growing effluents.
