Underground dams are part of a group of sustainable solutions used to increase the availability of water in areas of water scarcity. The objective of this article was to analyze the main challenges and perspectives regarding scientific research on the use of this technology in semi-arid regions. For this, a bibliometric analysis was carried out based on publications hosted in the Scopus database in the period from 1973 to 2022. The results showed that interest in the subject has increased by 300% in the last decade and is currently experiencing rapid growth. The search for strategies to reduce the impacts of climate change has guided discussions at a global level. The main trends in the theme involve topics on integrated management of water resources, modeling, water quality and decision-making methodologies. In Brazil, underground dams have been used to guarantee access to water in regions of water scarcity, but technology still needs to be improved so that it can be better used in the face of the demands imposed by climate change.
