Abstract

Referencing pop culture within classrooms is not new among people who are dedicated to teaching aimed at young audiences. However, understanding the content of the materials when selecting them is crucial for the good quality of learning and for the correct understanding of the subjects discussed in the classes. Who are the characters featured in the material? How are they dressed? What is the setting in which the story takes place? How do these characters express themselves? Summarizing these questions in other words, it can be said: does this teaching material work on representation? This question can lead the teacher to areas that are often unexplored when using different teaching materials within the learning environment. In a Philosophy class in basic education, the sensibilisation stage is the best time for these resources to be used. With the help of pop culture, this research aims to present the complexity of selecting suitable teaching materials. In order to do so, we will go through both the problems caused by the lack of adequate representation and those that arise due to the search for such equality. The inclusion of themes such as racism, affectivity, criminality, feminism and others, is crucial for citizen education and pop culture has already bought into this idea.
